Welcome to mathematics educators in the Toronto area. The Toronto Educators Association for Mathematics (TEAMS) is a Toronto chapter of the Ontario Association for Mathematics Education (OAME). Officially, we represent mathematics educators in the TDSB from the former Toronto, Etobicoke, East York and York Boards of Education, the TCDSB, University of Toronto and George Brown College, but educators are free to choose the OAME chapter to which they belong.
Our organization promotes mathematics education by organizing annual conferences for mathematics educators, holding our local TEAMS Math Olympics for grade 7 & 8 students, where the winners move on to the Ontario Math Olympics, to communicate with our members on issues in mathematics education, and to provide resources to teachers of mathematics in all grades.
We held a very successful conference at John Polanyi C.I. on October 23, 2014. Our next conference will be held at Monarch Park Collegiate on October 22, 2015. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Chris Suurtamm, from the University of Ottawa.
Our local Math Olympics was held at Madonna CSS on March 28, 2015, and was an overwhelming success, with about 120 participants from grade 7 and 8 from across Toronto. The 2015 Ontario Math Olympics were held in Ottawa on June 5 & 6. TEAMS sent 3 teams of grade 7 & 8 students to this event. The 2016 TEAMS Math Olympics will be held on April 2, 2016, while the Ontario Math Olympics will be in Scarborough on May 27 & 28, 2016.
The 2016 OAME annual conference will be held at Georgian College in Barrie on May 5 – 7, 2016. The theme will be Leap Into Math.
Members and non-members alike are welcome to take part in our activities. Members receive a discount at all of our local conferences, a discount at OAME conferences, email newsletters from TEAMS and OAME, and a quarterly magazine from OAME. Consider joining TEAMS and benefit from all we have to offer.
Congratulations to our very own Najwa Chalabi, who was awarded the OAME Award for Exceptional and Creative Teaching in Mathematics at the OAME conference in May, 2015.
